Living the Four Agreements

In a nutshell, I woke up yesterday feeling “pissy.” Initially, I wasn’t quite sure why I was “pissy,” I just knew there was a lot of stuff coming to the surface. I was feeling “aggravated” that I got the “hit” a client was going to be a no-show and/or cancel, so I contacted them, and I was right. I was feeling “led along” by individuals making promises yet nothing has come to fruition. I was feeling “hurt” by a recent event cancellation. I was feeling “confused” by recent communication with a few individuals.

I shared these feelings with a colleague to which she replied, “And in all this work and support of others, what is Shelly doing that feeds her soul? That allows the universe to support you? Where is the giving back to Shelly coming in?”

She then shared this post on her Spirit Fair Facebook page, and I knew she was speaking to me:
What are you doing in your life to take care of you? How are you caring for yourself, body, mind, and spirit? Sometimes in life we get mad or run out of steam….and the real deal is we are not being ‘fed’. No one knows how to feed your body, mind, spirit, but you. So what are you doing to feed your soul? Live well Take care of yourself? Caring for self is not self-ish, it is expanding the God Within You. What works for one person, won’t work for another. What are your tools for wellness? Know Thyself.

In his best-selling book, The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz gives four principles to practice in order to create love and happiness in our life. According to his website, “adopting and committing to these agreements is simple. Actually living and keeping these Four Agreements can be one of the hardest things you will ever do. It can also be one of the most life changing things you will ever do.”

The Four Agreements are:

1. Be Impeccable with your Word:
Speak with integrity.
Say only what you mean.
Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.
Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you.
What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.
When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.
Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama.
With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick.
Under any circumstance, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

With that being said, I actively and consciously take note of the Four Agreements and apply them to how I am handling a situation. I will say it has been quite a process learning not to take anything personally. Speaking my truth and communicating clearly has been at the forefront for quite some time, but even I relapse with making assumptions in regards to what I am reading or hearing. Can I blame it on my human-ness?

I previously wrote about it in the blog, Say What You Mean to Say. Needless to say, I reflected throughout the day of what I was feeling and how my energy and the energy around me continuously shifted.

Did I create this reality? Is the Universe reflecting back to me the energy I am emitting? Are these experiences simply opportunities to learn and to grow? I believe the answer is Yes to all. Needless to say, I honored myself and what I was feeling AND I feel so much better now.
